The Académie des Beaux-Arts launched its Prix de Photographie in 2007, on the initiative of Marc Ladreit de Lacharrière, member of the Académie.
The award is designed to help experienced photographers produce a significant project whose subject, approach and medium are freely chosen.

It takes the form of an endowment of 15,000 euros, awarded by a multi-disciplinary jury to a French or foreign photographer of any age for a photographic project that must be exhibited at the Institut de France in the following year.

The first three awards went to Malik Nejmi for L’ombre de l’enfance (2007), Jean-François Spricigo for anima (2008) and Thibaut Cuisset for En campagne (2009).

From 21 October to 21 November 2010, the winner of the 2009 award, Thibaut Cuisset, will exhibit photographs from his project Campagne française, Fragments: a series of some forty photographs focusing on the countryside of central France, ‘these forgotten places that are far from spectacular but which constitute the countryside and contribute to the great diversity of landscape we see in France’.

The 2010 finalists are Marion Poussier, Denis Rouvre, Lizzie Sadin and Toshio Shimamura.

The 2010 winner will be announced on 20 October 2010 at the opening of the Thibaut Cuisset show at the Académie des Beaux-Arts.
